Army Oval Patches

Army oval patches, referred to as background trimmings by the Institute of Heraldry, are worn by soldiers in airborne status units. Oval patches match the units beret flash, and are worn beneath the parachutist badge. Historically, the oval patch was created during World War II to frame the parachutist badge and allow the smaller insignia to stand out on uniform.
